Direct Access to Physical Therapy in Maine

You don’t need a doctor’s referral to start feeling better. In Maine, state law allows you to begin physical therapy directly with a licensed therapist — no waiting, no added appointments.

What This Means for You

  • Immediate Access: Start your physical therapy as soon as you’re ready. Skip the referral process and take the first step toward relief, recovery, and better movement.

  • Qualified Care: Our team of licensed physical therapists at Back in Motion provides personalized care plans focused on your goals — whether it’s pain relief, post-surgical recovery, or improved mobility.

  • Efficient, Patient Centered Treatment: We treat what we’re trained to treat. If your condition requires medical attention beyond our scope, we’ll refer you to the right provider. We believe in getting you to the care you need, no matter where it starts.

Important Considerations

  • Ongoing Care: In rare cases, if there’s no progress or your condition changes, we’ll coordinate with your healthcare provider to adjust your care appropriately.

  • Insurance Coverage: While Maine law allows direct access to physical therapy, some insurance plans — including Medicare, Workers’ Comp, or certain HMOs — may still require a referral for coverage. We recommend reaching out to your insurance provider first to understand your specific benefits. If you run into questions, our team is here to help guide you through it.

What to Expect at your First Appointment

When you arrive at any of our clinics for the first time, you’ll fill out some paperwork, and we’ll confirm your insurance coverage if you are using it. Because everyone’s situation is different, this can take some time, so we ask that you arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment time to ensure you have as much time with your PT as possible.

Evaluation and Plan of Care

The first step of any physical therapy treatment plan is an evaluation. During the evaluation, your physical therapist may have you perform or attempt certain movements, visually examine the area of concern, and gently move the affected area by hand if possible.

You’ll also have a conversation with your PT about what your goals are at the end of your treatment: better strength or mobility, return to normal routine after surgery, or increased performance. Having a clear goal not only helps you see the progress each session, but also helps our team know how to schedule sessions and what kind of at-home care to recommend.

In total, the first appointment may take up to 90 minutes, and subsequent appointments should be closer to 1 hour.

At-home Care

A key component of any physical therapy treatment is being consistent with the therapeutic exercises and movements prescribed by your PT. The at-home care is how your treatment makes the most progress between appointments.

At-home exercises can also be a strategy for long-term prevention, or your PT may recommend specific steps to take to help maintain your progress once your visits to the clinic are done.

You Choose Your PT Provider

The choice of where you go for physical therapy, even after surgery, is entirely up to you! Your doctor or hospital will often provide a referral, but you are always free to choose your own provider.

We work with any provider for tracking progress, complications, or any other required communication.

This freedom to go anywhere for PT extends to when you haven’t had a good experience elsewhere. When physical therapy works well, it can be life-changing. But not every experience is a perfect 10/10 for everyone.

We’re experienced with providing second opinions and providing safe, welcoming environments for people with all kinds of needs, even if your first choice for PT didn’t go as well as you’d hoped.
