Three reasons people feel lower back pain when sitting

Causes of Lower Back Pain When Sitting

Like many other areas of the country, Saint Peters, Missouri, has more and more people with sit-down jobs. These jobs usually take place in an office and require you to spend a large part of your day sitting down. Lower back pain is one issue that can come from all this sitting, and there are three reasons desk jobs can cause you to feel lower back pain when sitting.

1.   We’re leaning forward too much

Many of us have spent time craning forward while staring intensely at the computer screen, but this position is one reason you may feel pain in your lower back when sitting. Leaning forward places extra strain on the lower back muscles, and being in this position for hours at a time wears out these muscles. When these muscles are tired, they can’t support the lower back effectively. This may lead to issues like compressed discs or nerves that could cause lower back pain.

2.   We don’t get up enough

When people have a desk job, one of the requirements is typically that they spend a lot of time sitting at their desk. However, long periods of sitting still lock the lower back into a specific position. Over time, this can increase your chances of having lower back pain when sitting and even when standing. To help reduce the chances of lower back issues, it’s a good idea to get up and move around more. For example, you can try to spend five to 15 minutes every hour moving around when you’re stuck at your desk all day.

3.   Our cores aren’t strong

The core is made up of the muscles in your stomach, sides and back, and muscles in the pelvic floor and the diaphragm are also included in this category. The core muscles are important because they work together to support your body when seated. However, many of us have weak core muscles, and this can lead to poor sitting posture. In turn, poor sitting posture can lead to pinched nerves and other issues, and these may be the reason you’re feeling lower back pain when sitting.
