Two ankle sprain therapy exercises used in Saint Peters, MO

Ankle Sprain Physical Therapy

Physical therapists in Saint Peters, Missouri, have many techniques they can use to treat sprained ankles. One of these methods is therapeutic exercises, and these exercises typically fall into one of two categories: range-of-motion exercises and strengthening exercises. Within these categories, there are many exercises a therapist can add to your treatment plan. Here are two examples of ankle sprain physical therapy exercises your therapist may ask you to do:

1.   Knee motion exercise

One concern when someone has a sprained ankle is that the joint will become too stiff. In turn, this can affect how much you’re able to move the ankle, and range-of-motion exercises are designed to help reduce the effects of ankle stiffness. An example of a range-of-motion exercise that can be included in your ankle sprain physical therapy is the knee motion exercise.

To begin the exercise, sit on the edge of a chair with both feet flat on the floor. You’ll also want to leave some space between your feet, so you should make sure your feet are slightly more than hip width apart. Once your feet are properly placed, begin to slowly move the knee of the affected leg back and forth, and do this for two to three minutes unless the movement causes pain. This motion will help stretch the ligaments in your ankle, and you should try to do it several times per day.

2.   Towel scrunches

Another goal of your ankle sprain physical therapy will be to strengthen the ligaments and muscles in your ankle. To accomplish this goal, your therapist can develop a program of strengthening exercises that target the ankle. Towel scrunches are one strengthening exercise that can be included among these exercises.

As the name implies, you will need a towel for this exercise, and for most people, a hand towel will work just fine. Before you begin, you’ll also need to remove your shoes and socks, and you’ll want to sit in a hard chair. Once you’re seated, place the towel on the floor in front of your foot, and then place your foot on the towel. Next, grab the towel with your toes and scrunch it up. Hold your foot in this position for three to five seconds, and then release the towel. For best results, repeat the steps until you’ve performed the exercise eight to 10 times. You can also do the exercise two or three times a day to improve your ankle strength faster.
