When you’ve been injured or if you suffer from a chronic debilitating condition, you should visit a physical therapist for treatment. Physical therapists are experts in treatments that help rehabilitate your body. They specialize in treating your muscles, bones, joints, cartilage, ligaments and tendons.
Physical therapists use many different tools and techniques when treating your condition. The exact treatment you receive is always customized to your needs, based on on the severity of your condition and factors like age and medical history.
Three common physical therapy techniques
Although each treatment is customized to the needs of the individual, the goal is generally the same. Physical therapists aim to help strengthen and stretch your muscles and soft tissues to help reduce pain and promote recovery.
At Excel Sports & Physical Therapy, we offer a variety of treatments at each of our locations. Here are three common techniques we use as part of many of our treatments:
- Manual therapy — Manual therapy includes any hands-on techniques that involve massaging and manipulating parts of your body. There are different forms of manual therapy, including joint mobilization and strain-counterstrain techniques. These techniques will help reduce your pain and improve your range of motion.
Your physical therapist will examine your condition and determine what kinds of manual therapy techniques are best for you. - Ultrasound — Your physical therapist may use an ultrasound device as part of your treatment. An ultrasound device produces ultrasound waves that can heat up tissue deep in your body. This helps improve blood flow and can reduce pain, swelling and inflammation.
Ultrasound treatments are often used to treat muscle strains and tears, arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis and fractures. - Dry needling — Dry needling is a treatment that can help reduce pain and muscle tension. It involves the use of sterilized needles, which are inserted into trigger points in your muscles. This is primarily used to help reduce muscle pain, but it can be used for other conditions as well.
